I was raised around fish my entire life. Our family owned and operated a marina. At home I had at least three large fish tanks in my bedroom at a time. There was one point where I actually worked at our family owned bait shop. But still there is so much I didn't know about fish.
In the Montessori curriculum a child learns the parts of the fish and at times the life cycle of a fish but not much else. Sure there may be a shark unit or an ocean study, but when it comes to really learning about fish there are so few resources. We want to change that.
The Montessori-inspired Fish Printable Pack Bundle includes four beautifully designed activities to encourage children to learn more about fish.
The Montessori-inspired Fish Printable Pack Bundle is a 22 page resource designed for children in Montessori preschool and elementary classrooms. It can be used in a variety of ways depending on the needs of your students.
Fish Activities for Kids with Free Printable
Fresh Water vs. Salt Water Fish
This activity introduces the idea that there are two types of water environments: fresh water and salt water. Within these types of water environments there are cold and warm areas where fish live.
Children can choose to match water cards with descriptions. They can sort fish by water environment. One could even study each water environment separately and turn the fish cards into nomenclature cards. It all depends on the needs of your students.
Fish vs. Other Water Creatures
For a little one, it can be pretty hard to understand that not all water creatures are fish. Sunshine is trying to understand this for herself right now.
In this activity children sort fish and other water creatures as shown above. If you wanted to add a little more hands on fun you could use marine animal figures with the cards.
If you're just looking to teach children about a variety of fish, you can easily turn the fish cards into nomenclature cards.
Who Am I? Fish Cards
My boys absolutely LOVE Who Am I? cards. They have so much fun trying to match up animals to descriptions. If I'm being completely honest, they're better than I am at it. Lol.
Included in the fish bundle are eleven Who Am I? Fish Cards for fun and entertainment. They include descriptions of a variety of fish.
Once again, you can turn picture cards into nomenclature cards quite easily.
Fish Danger Match Up (and Sort)
Fish, just like other animals, have ways to protect themselves from harm and/or catch their food. This activity explores fish that are venomous, and those that use electricity, teeth, and size to ward off dangers and catch their meals.
Description cards also include a section about whether or not each fish is dangerous to humans or just other fish around them.
Picture and/or description cards can be used for sorting or a match up activity.
The Montessori-inspired Fish Printable Pack Bundle is one of our smallest animal resources but that doesn't mean it's not jammed packed with incredible printables that are well researched and true to life images. Fish are mysterious creatures. There is still so much we don't know about them.
