Figure Skating Mini Unit w/ Free Printables

Figure skating is the perfect winter unit

These delightful figure skating activities with free printables are designed for children in Montessori preschool and early elementary classrooms.

They are designed to meet the needs of all children, no matter their skills and abilities and provide so many wonderful ways to help with self-regulation and fine motor development while learning.

Figure Skating Mini Unit with Free Printables

Last week my plan was to replace all hockey themed activities on our shelves with figure skating activities.  However, the boys were LOVING their activities.

Princess enjoyed them too, but was very anxious to start figure skating activities.  She helped me put some of them together and couldn't wait to use them.

I decided to do a figure skating mini unit, and add new figure skating activities to the already existing hockey activities.

The older kiddos have access to Sunshine's activities too.

Between all shelves, they had quite the variety of activities to choose from.

Here's what we added to our shelves!

Figure Skating Window Writing Practice

Figure Skating Window Writing Practice

The kiddos have been working hard to learn their cursive letters this year using Montessori Sandpaper letters.  After practicing for quite some time, I thought we'd try out our skills, using Crayola Window Markers.

I kept seeing figure skaters doing figure eights in my head.  I thought practicing cursive was the perfect corresponding activity.

I included the sandpaper letters in the activity as a reference in case the kiddos needed to practice with them, before writing the letters on the window.

Figure Skating Spelling Words

Princess loved these figure skating spelling words to use with the movable alphabet.

The boys loved them too after watching figure skating one night on TV with me.

They were super excited to learn that boys figure skate too, and are pretty great at it.

Figure Skater Weighing Activity

Figure Skater Weighing Activity

Finding figure skating materials to use during our unit proved to be incredibly difficult.  I searched everywhere in town to find anything.

During my last desperate, I found an ice skater ornament at Kohls on clearance.  The ice skater was the perfect addition to our weighing activity!

We absolutely love our scale.

Figure Skating Multiplication

Figure Skating Multiplication

Since the kiddos did so well with hockey multiplication, I thought we'd add figure skating cards to our shelves.  I love how they turned out!

Figure Skating Greater Than/Less Than

Figure Skating Greater Than/Less Than

Last week, when I introduced the hockey themed greater than/less than cards, I realized the kiddos had forgotten how to answer them correctly.  I'm hoping more practice this week will jog their memories.

Figure Skate Cut, Glitter & Glue

Figure Skate Cut, Glitter & Glue

It's been a while since I put a cutting activity on our shelves.  When glitter is involved, everyone will cut!

The kiddos cut out the figure skates (or hockey skates), glued them on to the construction paper, and then decorated with glue and glitter.

Figure Skating Sensory Bin

Figure Skating Sensory Bin

When I asked Princess what she wanted to include in our figure skating unit, she said she wanted a sensory bin.  Not only did she request this activity, but helped me put it together as well.

The bin includes:

I just love how this bin looks and feels.

These figure skating activities are so much fun for kids and perfect during the winter season.
